Match report Game One

Match Report – Game One Westlake Vs Tygerberg High
On the 19th of April the South African Rugby Tour kicked off to a great start with a beautiful day, a vocal crowd and a rowdy Haka by the boys the scene was set for a spectacular game of rugby.
Tygerberg, being a very traditional Afrikaans school played typical South African rugby, hard, strong, with a never say die attitude. This could be seen in the first five minutes as Tygerberg constantly pounded our line with wave after wave of attack. However with solid defense especially in the mid-field area, the line never broke and the ball was finally turned over.
Composure set amongst the team and with this, Westlake went on the attack with five points going to Chris Winks through a penalty kick.
Both teams had strong defense and went into half time 3-0 to Westlake.
After a rev-up by the coaches at half-time Westlake came out strong and attacked the line at pace, this leading to another penalty kick to Chris Winks. Westlake kept this momentum going for the next fifteen minutes, and with the help of Chris Winks boot again, the score was 9-0 going into the last ten minutes.
George Kupu and Josh Cooke played some great rugby out wide but still Westlake could not find their way over the line, not even Kieran "Benji Marshall" Menzies who side-stepped three people could not get over the line. Fatigue started to set in and Tygerberg went back on the attack but strong defense from Jamal Thompson and Josh Cooke kept Tygerberg from crossing the line.
However the most memorable tackle came from Mark Haldane with a spectacular try-saving hit in the last few minutes to drive the winger over the side line and save the game.
The end result was 9-0 to Westlake. The boys came away not only with a win but also with good friendships made with the Tygerberg girls and boys. The boys enjoyed their time there and both schools have formed a strong relationship that I am sure will continue in the future.
Group One – Lyall Davenport, Josh McKoy, Courtney McCartney, Dylan Ferreira, Rory McGahan, and Jarrod Soar.
